We receive many of the same questions daily, and we wanted to provide a venue for consumers and dealers to have their questions answered in one location. We will continue to add to this as more come up. Whether they are related to our specific products or generic pellet questions, you can hopefully find the answer you are looking for here.

Energex FAQ

Consumers:

  • Does putting non-PFI certified pellets into my pellet stove void the warranty of the appliance?
    • Yes, if your stove was purchased after January 1, 2017, the EPA requires you to use a certified fuel in your pellet appliance. Failure to do so can result in the appliance manufacturer voiding the warranty of that appliance. For more information on the PFI Standards program, please visit our PFI Standards page
  • My stove has a lazy flame, what should I do?
    • Lazy flames are a sign of poor air flow through the burn pot. We would recommend following the maintenance/troubleshooting procedures in your appliance manual. For additional information, please visit our Customer Resources page
  • Can I buy pellets directly from your plant?
    • No, we do not sell pellets directly from our plant to consumers. We only sell to our authorized retailers. If you go to our Dealer Locator page you can find a trusted dealer in your area.

  • What type of marketing materials can Energex provide me with?
    • We have banners, brochures, pens, stickers, etc with branding for Energex and Ol’ Hick. We are constantly adding new materials and we are always open for suggestions.
  • How can I keep track and pay my invoices?
    • This year, Energex launched an online dealer portal to allow dealers to track invoices, create orders, pay invoices, and more as a way of making easier to do business with us. We understand you have a lot of suppliers and would like to make it as easy as possible for you. We are the only pellet company with this feature.

Ol’ Hick FAQ

  • What makes Ol’ Hick different than the other cooking pellets on the market?
    • Most of the cooking pellets on the market are not what they say they are. They may have “Hickory” in big letters, but the fine print says “100% Hardwood”. Cooking pellets could contain as low as 5% of the wood species stated on the bag or 0% of that wood species and the flavor is through flavored oils introduced during pellet production. Ol’ Hick is 100% of the wood it says on the bag, whether it’s Hickory or Apple. We don’t pretend to be something we are not.
  • I’m told I can’t use 100% Hickory because it’s too powerful. Is this correct?
    • NO! Most pellet mills can’t produce 100% Hickory because it’s an abrasive wood and they would prefer to cut it with oak. If you use the smoke setting on your pellets grill, it will create a dirty white smoke that can produce a bitter taste if the food is left too long on there. We recommend smoking in the 225-275 range that produces the blue, clearish smoke for the best flavor.
  • Do you have recipes you recommend trying with Ol’ Hick pellets?
    • Yes, we have a database of recipes on our recipes page that we will be constantly adding to. Please keep checking back for delicious new Ol’ Hick favorites!
  • Does Ol’ Hick have any other flavors other than Hickory?
    • Yes, in the fall of 2018 we launched a new 100% Apple cooking pellets. We were so committed to this flavor and making sure it was done right, we sourced the wood from a single orchard in Adams County. The trees were harvested, brought to our plant, and produced all in a few days to keep that freshness. For more info on Ol’ Hick Apple, please check out the Apple pellet page.
